Re: Dunstable v MERTHYR

Merthyr easily brushed aside a young Dunstable side to record their first win of the season and a sunny but breezy Creasey Park. Merthyr made one change from the side that drew at Stratford in midweek with Morgan replacing Traylor who had a place on the bench along with new loan signing Momodou (Mo) Touray replacing the on loan Matthew Harris.

Merthyr kicked off playing against the wind and after some early midfield play Patten put a good ball through to Jenkins who got it inside to Copp on the edge of the area and his left foot shot went just over the Dunstable bar. Dunstable nearly gave Merthyr an early goal when a long ball was sent towards the Dunstable 18 yard area and Sonuga sent it back to his keeper but Malone missed it but was quick enough to turn quickly and get back to stop the ball going over the line and cleared it. It was no surprise when Merthyr got their first goal in the 8th minute when Richards picked up a loose ball in midfield and sent a great looping pass towards the Dunstable box and Jenkins used his pace to outstrip the home side’s defence and slipped the ball wide of Malone and into the Dunstable net.

Merthyr continued to press forward and from a corner gained by Richards, Copp got his head to the ball which went right of the Dunstable goal. Then a Wright shot from a Richards’ free kick given after a foul on Morgan was charged down and cleared by the overworked Dunstable defence. Pring was playing well on the left creating some decent openings but the next chance fell to Dunstable when a long ball was sent down the Merthyr left and seemed to be going out of play but Tancock in an attempt to clear it only managed to get the ball up in the air towards the Merthyr area and Davies had to make a smart save at his near post to keep the ball out of the Merthyr goal from the resulting shot.
Merthyr resumed their attacking play and after a Richards shot was charged down, Morgan’s shot went over the bar. Then from a kick out by Davies, Jenkins headed the ball towards Patten who put it right towards Fleetwood who found Jenkins who slipped it further right towards Davies who pushed it inside to Fleetwood who was inside the area and as he tried to get past Trif he was brought down by the defender for an obvious penalty and unlike at Stratford the referee stood by his decision. Fleetwood sent the ball to Malone’s left as the keeper went to his right and the Martyrs were deservedly 2 up after 22 minutes.

For the rest of the first period Merthyr were camped in the Dunstable half and Copp had a shot saved after good work by Patten and Fleetwood and a good cross from Morgan just eluded Fleetwood and away for a goal kick. Richards then sent a ball towards the Dunstable area which held up in the wind and Fleetwood latched onto it and sent in an audacious lob which just cleared Malone’s bar. Dunstable did mange to gain a corner on the Merthyr right but the kick was caught by the wind and sailed safely over Davies’s bar. Shortly afterwards Mr Morrison brought the half to an end with the Martyrs deservedly 2 goals up.

Playing with a strong breeze can be more difficult than playing against it but Merthyr quickly put that theory to bed when virtually straight from Dunstable’s kick off Davies sent a kick out forward towards the Dunstable area which was headed out but Copp picked it up and gave it to Richards who sent it forward to Fleetwood who gave it to Morgan who pushed it inside to Patten who sent a sumptuous ball forward into the Dunstable area towards Jenkins who slipped the ball underneath Malone and into the back of the net and in the 46th minute the Martyrs were winning 3-0.

The game was now won but Merthyr did not rest on their laurels and continued to push forward. Richards had a 30 yarder charged down and shortly afterwards Jenkins made way for the debutant loanee Touray. Big Mo was immediately in the action when he did well to hold a throw from Davies and gave it back to Fleetwood who found Davies and he passed to Patten who found Touray in the area and he got it back to Patten who was tripped on the edge of the Dunstable area leading to a free kick to the Martyrs just outside the D on the right. Copp lined the kick up and sent it up and over the wall a la Barrow and sent it to the left of Malone and into the back of the net and in the 62nd minute.

Copp was getting a sight for goal and after a good ball by Touray he hit the post albeit from an offside position and Richards was also unlucky when a good shot from the edge of the area cannoned off Malone’s legs and the ball was scrambled away again after good work by Touray. Then in the 62nd minute excellent after work by Copp sent the ball forward over the head of a defender and found Fleetwood who sent in a left footed rocket of a shot from the edge of the area to the right of Malone’s despairing dive and into the back of the net to give Merthyr a 5-0 lead. Play had to held up for a minute or so to enable the assistant referee to repair the goal net which had become detached from the post such was the power of Fleetwood’s shot.

Dunstable didn’t give up and Koeries had a shot from the edge of the Merthyr area which Davies palmed away over his own bar and from the resulting corner Sonuga sent in a header towards goal which Davies grasped at the second attempt. Merthyr made a double substitution with Evans and Bowen replacing Patten and Fleetwood and almost immediately Bowen had a shot which went straight into Malone’s hands after being set up by Touray.

Merthyr got their sixth with about 10 minutes to go when after a further period of pressure Merthyr gained a free kick just outside the area when Morgan, attempting to cut inside for a shot was brought down. Copp took the free kick from the left hand edge of the area and his shot was beaten out by the wall and Collins only managed to get it up in the air and Touray got hold of it but a Dunstable defender nipped in but only succeeded in setting up Evans who from the penalty spot sent a half volley to the left of Malone and into the back of the net.

Further Merthyr pressure ensued but the Martyrs could not increase their lead and the game ended with a scoreline of 6-0 to Merthyr although for the last few minutes they played with 10 men after Evans seemed to suffer a dead leg after breaking up a Dunstable attack.

A thoroughly comprehensive victory which lifted the Martyrs well into the top half of the table.
