Merthyr retained their position, one place off the summit of the Southern League Premier Division with an excellent performance on the rain sodden pitch at Dorchester despite an early scare.
Manager Williams made only one change to the team that outclassed Redditch in the week bringing in Prosser for Jenkins who took a place on the bench alongside Copp, Wright, Watkins and Patten.

The game started in an explosive manner for the home side when they took the lead with just 15 seconds gone on the clock. Virtually from the kick off they attacked down the right of the Merthyr defence and the ball was passed inside and Wood attempted a through ball which was cut out nicely by McDonald but his clearance struck the onrushing Wood, bounced into space which was quickly filled by Wood who had the simple task of placing the ball wide of Ollie in the Merthyr goal giving the Martyrs keeper no chance.

Merthyr were under early pressure but did gain a corner on the left when a long ball hit by Barrow down the line came off a Dorchester defender and went over the line. Traylor’s corner was hit low to the near post and easily cleared but it was picked up by Barrow whose pass forward was intercepted by a Dorchester player but as he used his hand to do so, Merthyr gained a free kick just inside the home team’s half. Barrow’s kick was sent high into the area but the Dorchester defence came out quickly as one catching at least 3 Merthyr forwards offside. Dorchester’s left winger, Williams was causing early problems for the Merthyr defence and he got a cross into the Merthyr box which was partially cleared high into the air by Evans back towards Williams and Davies broke up the attack and sent a ball forward into the Dorchester half. Merthyr gained another free kick in the Dorch half and Davies sent it towards the edge of the area but it came to nothing.

Merthyr were now starting to put their passing together and after some good play on the right involving Traylor and Davies the ball was sent back to Tancock who slipped it inside to McDonald who sent a good diagonal ball down the Dorch left only for Dillon to slide in to rob Evans but only at the expense of a corner. Barrow took it and sent the ball high into the Dorch area towards the far post where Prosser was on hand to head the ball down towards goal and with no defender on the post he sent it wide of the keeper and parity was restored in the 8th minute of the game much to the delight of the large travelling faithful.

It was fairly end to end stuff although Merthyr looked the more likely and after one good move down the right Reffell put the ball across the area towards McLaggon who slipped it further left to Prosser but his shot was charged down and cleared. It was mostly Merthyr on the attack in an open game but Williams was still causing the odd problem on the Dorch left and after one of his forays Dorchester gained their first corner of the game on the left. Martin’s corner went into the Merthyr area and Ollie just about got a hand on it but the ball fell to Jerrard whose shot beat Ollie but was cleared off the line by Evans who sent his clearance up to close to the halfway line and Traylor picked the loose ball and ran into the Dorch half on the left and set off on an excellent run down the line beating a couple of defenders in the process and sent a slide rule pass towards Richards on the edge of the area and he ran on, took it around Murphy in the Dorch goal and tapped into an empty net and with about 19 minutes gone, Merthyr were deservedly 2-1 up. The Dorch defence were claiming offside but Richards was in line with the ball when it was played across.

Merthyr were very much in the ascendancy with Traylor and McLaggon terrorising the Dorch full backs and McLaggon gained a corner on the left when the hapless Oldring could only stop him by getting the ball away for a throw. Barrow’s throw was headed clear by Walker but only as far as Richards who tried to get it back into the area where it found Prosser but with the ball on the up he only succeeded in send the ball high over the Dorch bar. Dorch were trying to get back in the game but Merthyr as usual were now defending well and Ollie looking sound behind them doing well to make a good safe catch from a cross by Jerrard. With just over 30 minutes on the clock Merthyr should have had the chance to seal the game when Traylor did well on the right and got it towards McLaggon but the ball came out to Richards who ran in towards the right hand side of the Dorch area where he seemed to be clipped by Walker sending the Merthyr attacker to the ground just as he was about to get a shot away for what looked like a clear penalty – as admitted by the Dorch manager in his post match interview – only for the Mr Eddie, the referee, to brandish a yellow card to Richards for simulation. Walker must have said a few pleasantries as Richards barged him over in the aftermath and a small melee ensued. Shortly afterwards, Richards who seemed to pull his hamstring in the penalty incident was replaced by Wright as Merthyr continued to press gaining a few corners before the break which Dorch did well to defend. Wright did manage to get a shot away after some good play by Davies on the right but it went high over the bar and landed in the adjacent Tesco car park and McDonald also sent a headed effort from a Barrow free kick over Murphy’s bar. The half ended with Merthyr on the attack but unable to increase the 2-1 scoreline.

The second half was a rather scrappy compared to the first and Dorchester seemed to have more of the play but lacked the finesse and firepower to break down a solid Merthyr defence and I cannot recall Ollie Davies having to make a meaningful save. Dangerman Traylor had a minimum of 2 defenders watching him but he was still heavily involved in the best of the Merthyr attacks and after he received a ball out of the Merthyr defence he was pushed in the back by Martin and Barrow took the resulting free kick high into the area only for it to be headed clear by the Dorch defence and towards the halfway line. It quickly came back into the Dorch half and Reffell did well on the right to get a corner when faced by 2 defenders near the byline. Barrow’s kick was sent towards the far post where it was headed out by Walker but it went straight to Evans but his shot from about 25 yards went over Murphy’s bar. Reffell was coming more and more into the game and again he did very well on the right to get the ball across but it was well defended by the Dorch defence before Wright could strike and at this stage Dorchester were largely being penned in their own half but Jerrard did manage to get a shot away when he picked up a loose ball in the Merthyr half but his effort from about 30 yards went high over the Merthyr bar.

A few minutes later Traylor picked up a misplaced pass near the halfway line and went on a mazy run which saw him beat a couple of defenders and he shot from inside the left hand edge of the area but his shot went across goal and away for a goal kick. Dorchester then gained a free kick in the Merthyr half when Davies tripped an attacker which earned the Merthyr defender a yellow card. Clarke took the kick towards the edge of the Merthyr area where it was headed on by Wood but it was easily fielded by Ollie. Dorchester were now trying to press forward but made little impression and Merthyr had the best effort to chalk up another goal when a Barrow throw from the left reached the Dorch area and the headed clearance fell to Wright but his volley from the edge of the area fizzed just wide of Murphy’s right hand post. With about 20 minutes left Dorchester made a triple substitution in a desperate last throw of the dice to get something out of the game and it did perk them up a little but it was too little although Oldring did manage a shot from the right hand edge of the area but it went straight across goal failing to trouble Ollie. With just over 15 minutes on the clock Merthyr made their first substitution with Jenkins replacing the tiring Bearded Wonder who had led the line well.

The last period of the game had a feeling of inevitability about it and there was only going to be one winner but it was brightened up by an excellent piece of skill on the byline by Reffell who somehow got past 2 defenders and he crossed the ball to Jenkins who set up McLaggon for a shot on the turn which was palmed out by Murphy and Brookes completed the clearance. With just under 10 minutes left, McLaggon was replaced by Patten and Merthyr saw the game out easily gaining a valuable 2-1 victory.

After the relative shock of the early goal against, Merthyr did more than enough to secure victory and were never really in any danger. Prosser’s goal was a typical centre forward effort and Richards’s goal was superbly taken after excellent work by Traylor. My MOTM today is a toss up between Traylor and Reffell and I think a joint award is right in this case. Gavin Williams can feel rightfully proud of the whole squad as they are turning in performance after performance winning games in differing methods, playing ugly where necessary but always with a bit of flare in the background.

Our next 3 games are against teams in and around the playoff positions and although most have games in hand over us we have the points in the bag and we know to our cost from previous seasons that games in hand have to be won and as they build up it gets more difficult.
Onwards and Upwards!
