Tonight’s team:

Garner;
Watkins,Wright,McDonald,Tancock;
Evans,Reffell,Yorwerth;
Traylor,Prosser,McLaggon;

Subs:
Richards for Prosser after about 66 minutes
Jones
O.Davies
Barrow
Williams

Ryan Prosser came into the side for Eliot Richards who dropped to the bench, and with Glyn Garner also back Oliver Davies was also on the bench as James Bloom dropped out of the squad.

After about 3 minutes a long ball into the Kettering area from the left found Ryan Prosser on his own, but as he tried to flick it into the net first time the keeper was alert enough to make the save.

Kettering won a couple of corners and were looking the more threatening side as we couldn’t quite put our game together going forward.

But with about 21 minutes gone, after the play went down the left, Ashley Evans hammered in a shot which the keeper parried, with Prosser unable to get to the rebound. About a minute after that we took the lead with a move which started after Kayne McLaggon seemed to be fouled on the left in the middle of the field. Play was allowed to go on, and when the ball was played in from the left to Ian Traylor on the right of the area he curled a great left-foot shot past the keeper.

After about 25 minutes Ryan Prosser headed the ball on to Kayne McLaggon who took it on but was crowded out inside the area.

Despite Kettering looking useful on the ball and having a reasonable amount of the play Glyn Garner had had very little to do and 1-0 at half time was a fair reflection of play.

After the break Ian Traylor and Kayne McLaggon switched wings, and the play settled down to be mainly in midfield.

We came close after about 57 minutes when a right wing corner from Ian Traylor fell for Ryan Prosser to side-foot an effort towards goal, but the keeper produced a diving save to push it away.

Eliot Richards came on for Ryan Prosser with about 66 minutes gone, Kayne McLaggon moving into the middle.

A minute after the substitution Keyon Reffell ran a long way down the right before putting the ball in to Kayne McLaggon. He turned well, but put his shot wide of the far post.

Kettering were having most of the play, with us mainly relying on an occasional break forward as we defended well and battled for everything. With about 82 minutes gone Ashley Evans intercepted a pass in midfield, and with Kettering pushing forward was able to set Kayne McLaggon free, but the keeper blocked his shot.

Towards the end we were taking the ball into the corners, with Ian Traylor, and later Josh Yorwerth involved, and in what must have been the last minute of normal time Kayne McLaggon got the ball on the right and looked favourite to do the same again. However, using his strength and pace he slipped past a defender to take the ball towards goal close to the line before squaring it across for Josh Yorwerth, running in, to blast it into the roof of the net from close range.

We saw out the remaining minutes of added time with no trouble for what was a very good win against a side which were far from the worst we’ve seen at Penydarren Park this season, with a lot more to their play than the likes of Biggleswade who were content just to scrap for the ball and try and score from dead ball situations. But we matched Kettering with a battling performance in midfield, where I made Ashley Evans the man of the match, and in the second half our pace and persistence up front eventually brought its reward with the clinching goal. To be honest, I’d been hoping Scott Barrow would be fit enough to start the game tonight as I felt we needed our strongest defence out against a side packed with experienced attacking players, but you couldn’t fault either of our full backs tonight, and defensively it was a fine performance as I can hardly remember Glyn Garner being in the match at all, such was the protection he was given.
