Certainly was an excellent result, judging by the way Stratford played in the half game at Penydarren Park. Also good to see Keyon Reffell on the scoresheet at last this season!

Dominant Merthyr Town easily brushed aside the challenge of Stratford Town at the DCS Stadium to record an excellent 3-0 victory.  Manager Gavin Williams showed his attacking intent by replacing injured midfielder Scotcher with a striker and Prosser fully justified his selection with a superb display.

Garner played behind a back 4 of Tancock, McDonald, Wright and Barrow with Evans and Yorwerth playing in front of them with Reffell further forward and a front 3 of Traylor on the right, Prosser in the middle and McLaggon playing on the left.  Baggridge, Williams, Watkins and Jenkins were on the bench.

On what looked to be a good playing surface, Merthyr kicked off and went on the attack straight away with former Martyr, Summerfield doing well on the Stratford right to get the ball out of play for a throw and Barrow sent it towards the edge of the area and Prosser held it up well and gave it back to Barrow who delivered a far post cross which was met by Traylor and his header from about 7 yards seemed to hit the outside of Cooper’s left hand post but the referee spotted a push by Traylor on Westwood and awarded a free kick to the home side.  Summerfield was heavily involved early on and prodded Cooper’s kick further forward into the Merthyr half and Tulloch picked it up and sent in a cross towards the edge of the Merthyr area but Ahenkorah’s shot went high over the Merthyr bar.  Stratford were pushing forward trying to gain the initiative but Merthyr defended well and a long ball out of defence was well headed on by Prosser towards Reffell but Stratford managed to get it away for a throw.

Stratford made another break into the Merthyr half and Sheldon got a shot away from 20 yards which Garner saved at his post, going down to the left.  Merthyr retaliated and Prosser again did well to hold the ball and get it back to Yorwerth who pushed it forward to McLaggon on the left hand edge of the area and he got to the byline, came back inside and pulled the trigger but his shot was charged down and Stratford cleared.  Summerfield was doing well on the Stratford right breaking up Merthyr attacks and getting forward when he could but after conceding a throw following a good tackle on Reffell the ball reached Wright and he ran forward into the Stratford half and sent it right to Traylor who played a one two with Evans before crossing the ball towards Prosser but his shot went just wide of Cooper’s left hand post.  Tulloch then picked up a loose ball in the Merthyr half and sent in a shot from 20 yards but Garner again did well, this time going down to his right to make a good save.  Cooper also had to be on his mettle to firstly make a good catch from a Reffell cross under pressure from Prosser and secondly punch away a dangerous Traylor cross.  Tancock then sent a good ball down the right towards Traylor and he got down to byline and got past Westwood and sent in an excellent far post cross and Prosser got up well and got in a header towards goal and Cooper did well on his line to get his body in the way and claw the ball away and the ball was partially cleared and Barrow picked it up and gave it to Yorwerth who sent in a good, low 20 yarder which Cooper again saved well going down to his left and as the ball popped up, it came off Westwood and away for a corner which was headed back to Cooper by Summerfield.

A few minutes later, Barrow did well on the Merthyr left and got in a good far post cross but McLaggon’s header towards goal looped up into the air and into the grateful arms of Cooper.
Traylor then got a cross in from the right after good work by Evans which went over the keeper but was cleared out of play for a throw by Summerfield who went down with a recurrence of a hamstring injury, probably incurred when he tried to stop Barrow’s earlier cross and he hobbled off to be replaced by Brooks.

Fitzharris did well to get in a shot on goal which Garner saved easily and then Prosser who was doing well, winning virtually everything in the air and holding the ball up well on the ground after good work from Reffell he sent in a good goalbound shot which was deflected high over the Stratford bar for another Merthyr corner which was taken by Barrow which came to nothing.  Yorwerth also did well to beat a couple of Stratford players in the Merthyr half and in another challenge, Mr Price felt that Yorwerth had committed a foul, a decision which was contested by the Merthyr player and the referee issued the first (and only) yellow card of the game.  A few minutes later, Stratford picked up a loose ball in the Merthyr half and Sheldon broke towards the Merthyr goal and he pushed it left to Grocutt and he sent in a low shot past Garner towards the far post which the ball hit and bounced away to safety.

From the next Merthyr attack Merthyr deservedly opened the scoring and it was fitting that it was Prosser who got it.  Garner’s kick out was headed on towards McLaggon by Prosser but it was cleared and Yorwerth picked it up and he pushed the ball down to Barrow on the left and he sent in a sumptuous left footed cross, taking out most of the Stratford defenders and Cooper and Prosser  rose to head the ball into an unguarded net Merthyr were 1 up with about 10 minutes left in the first half.

Merthyr were playing with confidence, passing the ball about well and for the remainder of the half they put the Stratford defence to the sword but despite an excellent run by Traylor when he beat 3 Stratford defenders only for Francis to nip in and clear for a corner and a little later a Reffell cross from the byline which looped up off a Stratford defender and into the arms of Cooper and a McLaggon shot which went just wide of Cooper’s right hand post after he did well to make inroads into the Stratford area, Merthyr couldn’t increase their lead and the half ended with Prosser’s goal separating the two sides and it could have been more.

One of the problems arising in recent away games has been the failure to capitalise on a 1 goal lead but this time it only took 6 minutes of the second half to put the game beyond Stratford.  After a bit of end to end play at the start of the half where both defences managed to clear any apparent danger, Prosser got his head onto a clearance from the Merthyr half which found McLaggon and he passed the ball inside to Reffell and from about 20 yards Reffell rifled a superb shot past a bemused Cooper which hit the underside of the bar and into the back of the net giving the Martyrs a 2 goal cushion which their play deserved.  A few minutes later Tancock sent a ball into the Stratford half which was headed on by Reffell towards Prosser who passed it inside to Traylor but his shot from about 20 yards went straight into the welcoming arms of Cooper in the Stratford goal.  Shortly afterwards with the last throw of the dice Stratford made a double substitution with Angus and Gregory joining the fray but it made little difference as a minute later Traylor sent a low cross into Prosser from the right but his shot on the turn was well saved by Cooper going down to his right and Stratford cleared.

The Merthyr foursome of Traylor, McLaggon, Reffell and Prosser were leading the Stratford defence a merry dance and they were regularly at full stretch to keep the marauding Martyrs at bay and following a knock on from Prosser, McLaggon got hold of the ball on the edge of the area and was challenged by Westwood and Cooper but McLaggon still managed to get a shot away which was cleared off the line by Francis but only as far as Yorwerth, who from about 30 yards lashed in a shot which went wide of Cooper’s right hand post.  Barrow and McLaggon were linking well on the left and from one excellent ball by the fullback, McLaggon got to the byline but his cross was charged down and went for a throw which was taken by Barrow and after some crisp passing across the field Traylor got hold of it but he was well tackled and the danger was cleared.  Not to be outdone. Tancock and Reffell linked well on the right to release Traylor who sent the ball across field to find McLaggon who held it, came inside and sent in a far post cross which beat everyone including Prosser who bust a gut to try and get there but he just failed to do so and the ball went for a goal kick.

In the midst of the mayhem in the Stratford final third the home side did try to get forward and Angus did manage to get hold of the ball in the Merthyr area but his shot went across goal and wide of Garner’s left hand post.  They also gained a free kick on the left about 35 yards out after Evans was penalised but Fitzharris’s far post kick was well dealt with by the Merthyr defence.  Reffell could have got his second and Merthyr’s third when Barrow sent a good low ball into the Stratford area which Traylor latched on to but he was challenged by Westwood and Traylor managed to partially block the attempted clearance and it fell to Yorwerth who found Evans who gave it right towards Tancock who sent the ball long into the Stratford area where it was headed down towards Reffell who held it and pushed it left to Barrow who sent it straight back in and from just outside the area, Reffell sent a shot just wide of Stratford’s right hand post.  Shortly afterwards, Prosser, who had put in an excellent shift was replaced by Watkins who slotted into the Merthyr midfield with Reffell moving further forward and Williams replaced Evans and he also took up a position in midfield.

Almost immediately, Williams received the ball in the centre circle in the Stratford half and as he held it he was fouled by Gregory.  Williams took it quickly and noticing that Cooper was off his line he tried to chip the Stratford keeper but the ball went just over the bar.  At the other end Traylor was penalised for a foul just outside the Merthyr area on the right but Gregory’s kick deflected off McDonald and away for a corner which was easily dealt with by the Merthyr defence although the ball did find its way back into the box but Gregory’s header went well wide.  Shortly afterwards, Barrow limped off with a recurrence of a hamstring pull he suffered in Hitchin a few weeks ago and was replaced by Baggridge who lined up in the middle of the back four with Wright moving to left back.

With 3 minutes left on the clock Reffell did manage to double his tally when Yorwerth did well to pick up a loose headed clearance from the Stratford defence and he passed it left towards Reffell and from about 18 yards, Reffell sent a powerful left footed shot wide of Cooper and into the back of the net and the scoreline had a more realistic look with Merthyr leading 3-0.  Merthyr saw the game out comfortably spending most of it in the Stratford half and the 3-0 win means that Merthyr move up to 6th in the table, just outside the playoff positions with at least one game in hand over most of those above.

It was a very good win against a Stratford side who were only a point behind us at the start of play.  Gavin Williams pulled off a masterstroke by replacing the injured Scotcher with Prosser who had a great game, scoring one and having a hand (or more accurately a head) in another.  It was he who the home fans were talking about after the game and deserves my MOTM award.  Reffell, who rarely scores an unspectacular goal comes a close second for his excellent brace but it was a night when everyone had a good game and didn’t give Stratford a look in and Merthyr were in a different class to them.

Onwards and Upwards![/b][/b]

Not a Bard Report

Post  Boz1964 on Wed Oct 19, 2016 11:10 am

Comprehensive and detailed account as usual, Ancient Turf, which is appreciated by the non ( midweek) traveller community.

Sounds like SuperGav & Clarkie got the balance right again last night.

The manner of this victory will send a message to our near rivals of our quality and intent this season.

Great to see the Prossiah involved in 'Acts 1 and 2' and delivering the 'proverbial' goal.

He is a bearded goal machine and a threat whoever he faces.

Only negative is the hamstrings of Barrow.

Can we buy second hand ones on e- bay or grow some on the back of a Simbec Lab Rat?
