Tonight’s team:

Cameron Clarke;
Daniel Dima,Scott Tancock,Kieran Davies,Connor Hanford;
Jamie Jones,Jay Davies,Ben Watkins,Tom Randall;
Charlie Loss,Gavin Williams;

Subs:
Keane Royal for Gavin Williams after about 53 minutes
Joe Cooper for Scott Tancock after about 58 minutes
Callum Price for Ben Watkins at the same time
Dylan Davies

As foreshadowed it was a team largely made up of Under-19 players, but with Gavin Williams making a welcome return to action in a home game for the first time in about 18 months. He nominally played up front but was to frequently drop deep to keep attacks moving.

Cinderford similarly fielded several young and fringe first team players but had more of the latter in their squad than the Martyrs. Lee Hartshorn was in defence for them, with Jaye Bowen in his familiar place on a subs’ bench.

We made a good start and almost caught Cinderford out with less than 3 minutes gone when we should really have scored. Charlie Loss got in a shot from 15 yards which was parried by the keeper, and Ben Watkins following up put his shot straight at the keeper.

We were having the better of the game, and after about 15 minutes a good break down the left saw left back Connor Hanford play the ball in to Tom Randall inside the area. He turned well but put his shot off target. A couple of minutes later the Cinderford keeper put the ball straight to Charlie Loss in space about 25 yards out, but from just inside the area the delayed his shot too much and eventually could only put it wide. He got in a better effort three minutes later with a shot which went narrowly wide.

We were really working the Cinderford keeper, with Cameron Clarke at the other end having nothing to do. After about 25 minutes Connor Hanford got in a shot after cutting inside from the left, and a minute later Tom Randall went on a great run from midfield and his shot was just kept out by the keeper. The ball broke to Gavin Williams and he set up Charlie Loss for a fierce low shot which the keeper somehow got down to with the ball deflecting up and over the bar.

We seemed always able to find space, with Ben Watkins and Jay Davies busy in midfield, but the only thing missing was a goal.

With about 35 minutes gone Cinderford made a substitution, bringing on an experienced defender, and the half ended with only their goalkeeper having kept them in the match, Cameron Clarke at the other end having had little to do.

We made a good start to the second half, and about 4 minutes into it Daniel Dima cut in from the right and his deflected shot was just gathered by the keeper.

After about 53 minutes Gavin Williams was replaced by Keane Royal, and about 4 minutes after that Cinderford came close to scoring for the first time. A back header by Kieran Davies let in an attacker but Cameron Clarke got down well to block his shot at the near post. We then made a double change, with the remaining two outfield players with first team experience going off – Scott Tancock replaced by Joe Cooper, and Ben Watkins by Callum Price. Cinderford also made a change, with Lee Hartshorn going off,

We were less dominant than in the first half and finding it difficult to find a way through the Cinderford defence. In turn, Cinderford were also finding it difficult to get through.

After about 72 minutes there was a nice bit of skill from Cameron Clarke to control the ball after he had to come out of his area to a long ball.

Jaye Bowen then came on for Cinderford.

After about 81 minutes our first real effort on goal in the second half came when Charlie Loss did well to get in a fierce shot which was heading just inside the far post until the keeper got down well to push it away. Almost straight away Cinderford went down the other end and Cameron Clarke had to hold a fierce shot at the near post.

The first and only corner of the match came after about 84 minutes but we were unable to make anything of it.

The game then ended 0-0 and penalties were as follows:

Cinderford no. 8 – saved by Clarke – 0-0
Jamie Jones for Merthyr – shot over the bar – 0-0
Cinderford no. 2 – scored – 1-0
Charlie Loss for Merthyr – scored – 1-1
Cinderford no. 18 – hit the bar – 1-1
Tom Randall for Merthyr – saved – 1-1
Cinderford no. 11 – scored – 2-1
Keane Royal for Merthyr – scored – 2-2
Cinderford no. 6 – scored – 3-2
Jay Davies for Merthyr – scored – 3-3
Cinderford no. 16 scored – 4-3
Kieran Davies for Merthyr – saved – 4-3 the final score

So in the end Cinderford’s best player – their goalkeeper – won the match for them.

Well, rather strange to think this was a first team game, but the first half was thoroughly entertaining and one-sided and we did everything but score. We either faded somewhat after the break or else Cinderford pulled themselves together and it was more even. There was a lot of good skill and persistence on display from the young players who didn’t deserve to lose. However, exit from this competition means a reduction in the chances of fixture congestion over the next month or two, so I for one am not too sorry.

Difficult to choose a man of the match as all the players shone at various times
