The bit about the injured players was only added on later in the day, so may not have been there when you looked!

We drop one place to 7th just outside the play off places

Next Saturdays opponents Whitehawk won 3-0 at home v Oxford City today, let's hope our injured players are fit to travel.

And let's hope we've got enough fit players to put a decent side out against Banbury United away next Tuesday night. They also won 3-0 at home today, against Kings Langley.

Arguably a better point today than against St Ives last week.

Thanks for allowing me to register on your Forum. Great to have seen you guys again from Merthyr today. Thought a draw was a fair result although the outstanding strike from Hitchin's Robbie Burns was against the run of play at that point in the game. Your defence was incredible and blocked every Hitchin attempt on goal throughout the second half. I am amazed at the mileage your club does in this Division and your excellent away record that goes with it. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Depleted Merthyr resolutely hung on for a draw at Top Field in a battling defensive performance. Already without Prosser, Jones and Davies through injury, during the game at Hitchin we also lost the services of Barrow, Brown and Jenkins.

We started with Garner in goal, Tancock, McDonald and Baggridge in defence with Traylor as right wingback and Barrow on the left. Wright again played in midfield alongside Scotcher with Brown playing behind Reffell and McLaggon who was again captain for the day. Manager Williams named himself on the bench with Clarke, Hutson, Evans and Jenkins joining him.

Hitchin started well with Traylor heading clear a dangerous cross to Baggridge who completed the clearance and then Merthyr went on the offensive with Reffell ran with the ball into the left hand edge of the Hitchin area and from an acute angle shot towards goal which Johnson got down well to save. After a period of pressure, Tancock was fouled outside the Hitchin area on the Merthyr left. Scotcher took the kick and sent it towards the far post where it was headed back across goal by Wright and McDonald was on hand at the other post to steer it into the roof of the net in the 8th minute for his first goal for the Martyrs.

Hitchin were under pressure and Reffell made a good run down the right but was tackled and Hitchin got it away. Scotcher then got in a goalbound effort which was deflected behind for a corner which was taken by Barrow and sent near post and between them Johnson and Walster got it clear but only as far as Scotcher who sent it back out to Barrow and his cross found Reffell but Walster was there again and this time he managed to get it away fully. At this stage Merthyr were well on top and a second looked on the cards but Hitchin broke away and made inroads into the Merthyr half and Burns sent in a speculative shot from about 20 yards which went over the outstretched right hand of Garner and into the net and Hitchin had restored parity, against the run of play after 16 minutes.

Hitchin took heart from the equaliser and got more and more into the game and Merthyr were now on the defensive but defensively we looked strong and Barrow did well to tackle and clear but he stayed on the ground. He got to his feet but was obviously in discomfort with what looked like a hamstring injury and it was no surprise when just before the half hour he was replaced by Jenkins who went up front with McLaggon with Reffell dropping deeper and Tancock moved across to the left with Wright replacing Tancock in the back 3 and Brown dropped back to allow Traylor to roam further forward. Merthyr gained a corner which Scotcher sent far post and Wright got up well to head it towards goal but Johnson did equally well to make a save at his post rising smartly to his left. Hitchin now started to have more of the play and Merthyr were under pressure but limited Hitchin to long range efforts, one such from Smith who sent a 25 yarder well wide of Garner’s goal and Donnelly also got a 20 yarder in which went high over the bar. Any crosses or throws that came in were being well dealt with by Garner and his defensive colleagues. Just before the break Brown suffered a recurrence of his ankle injury and was replaced by Evans who reclaimed the captain’s armband from McLaggon. Hitchin did get one chance before the break when Kirkpatrick and McBride combined well together on the right before Jenkins intervened to get the ball out for a throw. Kirkpatrick received the ball from the throw and sent a good looking cross into the area which was met by Ann who sent in a good downward header which was very well saved by Garner and the ball was cleared. The half ended all square with Merthyr defending well.

Merthyr again rejigged their formation at the start of the second half reverting to a flat back 4 with Tancock on the left, Baggridge and McDonald in the middle and Wright appropriately playing on the right side and the pace of the game dropped slightly. Merthyr gained a free kick about 10 yards outside the area and Scotcher sent it towards the wall and Burns got his head to it but could only deflect back towards Johnson who got his fist to it and eventually kicked it partially clear to McDonald who tried to chip Johnson but it just cleared the Hitchin bar. Hitchin attacked and Donnelly was fouled about 10 yards outside the Merthyr area but the resulting free kick was well caught by Garner. Hitchin were having more of the play but again the Merthyr defence held firm and were defending confidently with Tancock and McDonald prominent. Jenkins made a good tackle in the centre circle and again seemed to aggravate an injury and was replaced by Williams who moved upfront alongside McLaggon. From a ball sent into the Merthyr area Hitchin managed to get a shot away which was well saved by Garner which led to a scramble in the 6 yard box with Garner managing 2 more saves to keep the Hitchin forwards at bay and Merthyr finally got it away. Merthyr attacks were getting more sporadic and we were unable to find our front players to hold the ball and give the defence a bit of breathing space but anything that did get through was safely dealt with by Garner. Hitchin were camped largely in the Merthyr half and Donnelly got one good header in which went just wide of the Merthyr goal. Then a long ball into the Hitchin area led to Johnson making a good catch under pressure from Williams and Garner made a similar save at the other end and hung onto the ball well. Hitchin gained a free kick on the right hand edge of the Merthyr area which was taken by Walster but his low cross deflected off Evans for a corner which was well dealt with by Baggridge.

It seemed that Merthyr had the measure of the Hitchin attack and could have scored themselves when McLaggon was fouled just outside the Hitchin area on the left by Wright (W). Scotcher took the kick into the area and it was headed back across goal towards the far post and McDonald was inches away from getting his head to it. Hitchin made a double substitution with about 10 minutes left in an effort to prise open the Merthyr defence but to no avail and again it was Merthyr who had a chance to nick the game. Reffell picked the ball up near the Hitchin area and played a one to with Traylor before getting in a shot which looked goalbound before it deflected off Pearson and away for a corner. Williams took the corner which cleared everyone in the box but Reffell picked it up and tried to return the ball into the area but his cross was charged down and Hitchin cleared. Both sides had attacks before the end of the game and Garner had to make one good save before the end when he got up well to push a good shot from Donnelly over his own bar and did well again to punch away the resulting corner taken by Smith and Baggridge completed the clearance. Neither side could add to the score and the game ended 1-1.

It was a tremendous defensive display by Merthyr and it was certainly a point gained today. Hitchin had more of the game and may feel hard done by but they failed to take advantage of the possession they had and the Merthyr defence was excellent. Anything that did get through was well dealt with by Garner and Merthyr had a couple of chances towards the end which could have nicked the game but overall a draw was a fair result. MOTM for me today was McDonald, not only for his goal but also for his solid display at the back with Tancock, Baggridge and Wright not far behind. We are suffering an injury crisis at the moment and it will be a patched up team which takes the field at Banbury on Tuesday but a repeat of the solidity and passion shown by our players at Hitchin may be enough for us to come away with something.

The players deserve a lot of credit for what they have done over the last few weeks with the plethora of away games. I just go along to watch and am retired and I’m knackered but our lads work their socks off on the pitch and also have day jobs to do and I can’t speak highly enough of them.
Onwards and Upwards!
