Just the result we needed to regain momentum after the St Ives postponement and losing at Cinderford. Well done.

Good steady performance by the lads yesterday, and a bonus to get a clean sheet too. A great team effort across the board, after last weeks disappointments.
All credit to Barnstaple, they managed to get the game played in spite of torrential rain,(the journey down was horrendous).
A nice club with decent friendly fans, who were very positive, and full of praise for the way our club has come back from the brink, as an example to others in a similar position. Well worth the ordeal of the traffic.

Merthyr eased past Barnstaple thanks to a dominant performance and earned a place in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup after an uneventful journey to the Mill Road ground.

With Brown and Barrow injured and Wright unavailable manager Gavin Williams played with Garner in goal, a back 3 of Jones, Baggridge and McDonald. Wingbacks Traylor, operating on the right and Davies, both of whom joined Evans and Scotcher in midfield at every opportunity and Reffell played behind the front 2 of McLaggon & Prosser. Williams named himself on the bench as well as Hutson, Bowen, Jenkins and Tancock.

Barnstaple made an early foray into the Merthyr half and a good cross came into the area which Davies cleared as far as Jenkins but his shot went about 20 yards wide if the Merthyr goal. Merthyr quickly exercised their authority when after a when Traylor sent in a good cross into the Barnstaple area which Aaron Harper-Penman could only clear for the first corner of the game. Scotcher sent a short corner to Traylor who got into the area and his cross was deflected out by a Barum defender but only as far as McLaggon who deftly slipped the ball past Oliver in the Barum goal from about 10 yards and Merthyr were 1 up in the 8th minute.

Merthyr continued to pile on the pressure and came close to adding to their lead on a few occasions although a cross into the Merthyr area from Jed Harper-Penman was deflected behind by Baggridge for a Barum corner from which Garner made a good safe catch showed that Barnstaple were still in the game.

Shortly afterwards there was a break in play due to animal excrement being found on the pitch but unlike at Oldland Abbotonians a few years ago the referee failed to identify the animal in question. McLaggon did well to get into the area and Oliver did well to deflect his shot behind for a corner which was taken by Scotcher and McDonald got in a header which was well saved by Oliver who got down well low to his right. Evans then had a goalbound shot deflected away after good work by Traylor and few minutes later Prosser did well to head on a long kick out by Garner which found Traylor but his shot was deflected behind for Merthyr corner which Scotcher sent in near post which was set back by Prosser to McLaggon and his shot was deflected behind for yet another Merthyr corner which came to nothing. Prosser opted to pass across goal instead on having a pop at goal from a Scotcher cross which was cleared by the Barum defence and a few minutes later Prosser did well to get up to a Traylor cross but his header went just over the bar. Scotcher also sent in a shot from about 12 yards which went just over the top and a few minutes later Prosser did well to get a cross down to McLaggon who tried to place his shot between Oliver’s legs but the Barum keeper managed to close them in time and deflected the ball behind for another Merthyr corner.

It was only a matter of time before Merthyr increased their lead and from the short corner taken by Traylor to Scotcher, the midfielder slipped the ball into Traylor who had advanced into the area and his shot was palmed over his own line by Oliver at his near post and in the 32nd minute Merthyr were deservedly 2 up.

Merthyr remained on the attack up to half time gaining a few more corners and Reffell brought a good save out of Oliver from a shot from about 8 yards and shortly afterwards came the incident which put the game well beyond the home side. A few minutes before the break Reffell received the ball on the Merthyr right and he was caught by a high tackle from Aaron Harper-Penman and the referee, Mr Underhay, had no option other than to send the Barum captain off. The resulting free kick was cleared away for a corner which came to nothing and the referee brought the half to with Merthyr leading 2-0 and on the balance of play it could have been a lot more.

Before the second half started the net of the goal being defended by Barnstaple needed running repairs and the half started with the Martyrs still in the ascendancy. However the cutting edge that
was visible in the first half was lacking and the game was being played largely in midfield however, Traylor did manage to get a cross in towards Prosser but Oliver made a good save from the resulting header. Shortly afterwards Prosser seemed to pull up lame and he was replaced by Jenkins and Merthyr reverted to a back 4 with Davies moving across to the right and Traylor was pushed further forward. Scotcher was involved in the best passages of Merthyr play but there was a lack of the earlier urgency which allowed 10 man Barum back into the game but Garner’s goal was not really threatened. An unmarked Barum substitute, Francis got his head to the ball from a free kick but could only send it wide of the Merthyr goal and Jenkins got on a shot from about 30 yards which went well over Garner’s bar and they were only Barnstaple efforts of note. Merthyr were still in control but seemed content to play the game out. When Merthyr had the ball, Traylor on the right and Jenkins on the left were stretching the Barum defence but at this stage the home side were defending comfortably.

With Merthyr still looking comfortable they took the opportunity of giving Evans a rest and replaced him with Bowen and with about 10 minutes to go, Merthyr brought the game to life again when Bowen picked up a Barum clearance from a Scotcher corner and he beat a couple of players before finding Jones who got it forward to Traylor whose initial effort was pushed out by Oliver but Traylor quickly latched onto the rebound and neatly slipped it past the hapless keeper and Merthyr were 3 up. McLaggon was also in attendance but as he was in an offside position he sensibly kept well clear of the ball. Merthyr seemed determined to end the game on a high and after receiving the ball from Traylor, McLaggon sent in a good shot which was well saved by Oliver at his near post and Huxtable completed the clearance. Shortly afterwards, Traylor was replaced by Hutson.

Merthyr now upped their game and Oliver made a good double save from McLaggon and Hutson and another one from a Reffell shot a few minutes later and just before the end Merthyr completed the scoring when Reffell picked up a clearance from the Merthyr half and he pushed it forward to McLaggon who slipped it past Oliver’s left hand from about 7 yards and Merthyr were deservedly 4-0 up. Shortly afterwards Mr Underhay blew the final whistle and Merthyr were through to the next round.

It was a comfortable win and could have been more but 4-0 ain’t a bad scoreline to come home with. Merthyr played well with Scotcher having benefitted from recent run outs looked the player he was at the first part of last season. Defensively we were rarely tested and didn’t give Barnstaple a look in. We looked lively upfront especially in the first half and the in last 10 minutes. MOTM for me was Traylor who was comfortable at right wingback and further forward after the first substitution and scored 2 good goals.

That’s £3000 in the bank and hope for a good draw tomorrow.
