Today’s team:

Garner;
Davies,Baggridge,Jones,Barrow;
Traylor,Brown,Evans,Jenkins;
Reffell;
Prosser;

Subs:
Wright for Jenkins after about 63 minutes
Scotcher for Barrow (injured) after about 74 minutes
Bowen for Evans at the same time
Hutson
Bloom

Presumably Kayne McLaggon and Curtis McDonald were both unfit, so Ryan Prosser started up front, with Corey Jenkins coming into the side on the left with Scott Barrow at left back.

In the early stages we couldn't get hold of the ball at all but then the game became more even with corners to both sides. The closest to a goal came after about 11 minutes when Corey Jenkins got to the line and pulled the ball across leading to a bit of a scramble, ending when Ian Traylor at the near post put a high cross-shot off target. But 3 minutes later we took the lead when Traylor on the right sent in a fierce cross-shot which was pushed away by the keeper to where Corey Jenkins was on the left. He saw his shot blocked, and Ryan Prosser’s effort from the rebound was then cleared off the line. The ball reached Jenkins on the left again and he put it across goal for Ian Traylor to turn it into the net.

Cirencester then put us under some pressure in search of a quick reply, and on about 20 minutes a shot from the right came back off the angle of bar and post. But we weathered this and after about 24 minutes, following a corner a right-foot shot from Corey Jenkins was deflected just wide by a defender.

The game evened up again, and Scott Barrow, moving up from left back had a shot deflected wide.

It was the sort of game where you felt that a second goal before half time would be enough to get a win, and that duly arrived after about 42 minutes when a left wing corner into the goalmouth fell for Rhys Baggridge to hit the ball into the roof of the net.

It was a deserved scoreline at half time as although far from being one-sided we were well worth two goals whereas Glyn Garner had been untroubled in goal with Cirencester’s shot against the woodwork the only time thay had looked like scoring.

Keyon Reffell had had a fairly quiet first half in contrast to recent games, but he was involved after about 50 minutes throwing a good dummy to a ball from the right by Adam Davies which allowed it to reach Ian Traylor on the right of the area. He picked his spot with a shot heading inside the post but the goalkeeper just got down to push it away.

Cirencester then had one of their spells of pressure, with a series of corners, but again we dealt with it, and came back after about 62 minutes when Jon Brown, put away down the left put the ball across to Keyon Reffell on the edge of the area, but his first-time shot was sliced wide of the post. Almost straight after that we made the first change, with Corey Jenkins being replaced by Jarrad Wright. He went into midfield with Jon Brown wide on the left.

We extended the lead after about 67 minutes when we had something of a lucky break down the right with the ball somehow staying in play to reach Keyon Reffell. He ran to the line and pulled the ball back to unmarked Jon Brown on edge of the area. He made no mistake with a shot inside the far post.

After about 71 minutes from a corner Adam Davies had to kick the ball away from the near post.

We made two further substitutions after about 74 minutes, Scott Barrow seeming to be limping as he went off to be replaced by Elliot Scotcher, and at 3-0 up Jaye Bowen was given a bit of game time to give Ashley Evans a bit of a rest at the same time. The changes saw Wright going to left back, Bowen wide on the left and Jon Brown reverting to midfield.

After about 84 minutes Glyn Garner had to make his first real save, comfortable getting down to a shot from inside the area. Then either side of the 90 minute mark Cirencester for the first time created a couple of chances, but Garner made a fine save to tip the ball over the bar following a header from a long cross from the right. He repeated the feat from the subsequent corner, touching the ball onto the bar and over. But the game was over by then, and was really an even more comfortable win than the one over Basingstoke and on today’s evidence Cirencester are going to struggle this season.

Attendance of 403, with the bad weather probably responsible for knocking nearly 100 off the gate. We’re now 3rd, and it was a valuable 3 points with the number of away games coming up.

I made Gethin Jones match of the match as I don’t think he put a foot or head wrong, and together with Rhys Baggridge nullified any threat from Cirencester’s veteran striker Charlie Griffin, who was really their only threat. There were good performances from the likes of Ashley Evans, Ian Traylor and Jon Brown, while I thought Ryan Prosser and Corey Jenkins had rather in-and-out games although both played their part, especially Corey Jenkins in the first half.
