Tonight’s team:

Garner;
Davies,Baggridge,Jones,Tancock;
Traylor,Brown,Evans,Barrow;
Reffell;
McLaggon

Subs:
Jenkins for Tancock after about 67 minutes
Prosser for McLaggon after about 74 minutes
Scotcher for Evans (injured) after about 80 minutes)
McDonald
Bowen

No Jarrad Wright in the squad, so Scott Tancock kept his place in the side, though somewhat surprisingly playing at left back with Scott Barrow wide on the left. Keyon Reffell played behind Kayne McLaggon, so was really a 4-4-1-1 formation.

The first attempt at goal from either side came after about 6 minutes when Adam Davies ran into the area on the right to put a shot over the bar. A couple of minutes later Kayne McLaggon went on a long run from the right but his left-foot shot from the edge of the area lacked enough power to seriously trouble the goalkeeper.

Basingstoke were having most of the possession but without causing us much trouble. After about 12 minutes they attacked on the right of the area and Glyn Garner had to push away a shot for a corner. When it came in the Basingstoke no. 5 had a free header which he put wide of the far post.

After about 23 minutes a neat backheel by Keyon Reffell on the right of the area gave Ian Traylor a chance to put the ball across goal but it evaded everybody and the far post as well.

In contrast to Ian Traylor on the other side Scott Barrow was seeing very little of the ball on the left, but in a rare opportunity for him to do something with it he cut inside and put a right-foot shot just wide of the far post.

But with about 39 minutes gone, Barrow having moved infield to cover for Jon Brown breaking down the right picked up the ball and from the edge of the area curled a left-foot shot inside the post to make it 1-0.

About a minute before the break Keyon Reffell was played in on the right of the area by Ian Traylor but put his shot across goal and past the far post.

It was a deserved lead at half time, as although Basingstoke had quite a bit of possession they had really only had two chances. It was disappointing how little we’d been able to bring Scott Barrow into the game, part of the reason perhaps being that whenever Scott Tancock had the ball he tended to look to play it into midfield instead of down the left.

About 4 minutes after the break we attacked down the right and Keyon Reffell pulled the ball back from the line to Kayne McLaggon near the penalty spot but he put the ball over the bar. A minute later we again went down the right with Adam Davies playing the ball forward for Jon Brown to put over a good cross to the far side of the area but Scott Barrow put his header wide.

We were putting some good moves together but were just unable to find the second to probably kill Basingstoke off. Again, just after the hour mark, a long ball to Ian Traylor in the area on the right saw him lay it across to Kayne McLaggon, but he delayed his shot and it was eventually blocked.

At 1-0 Basingstoke were still in the game, and after about 66 minutes an attacker put a header wide from a long cross from the left. We made a change a minute or so after that, with Corey Jenkins replacing Scott Tancock, and Scott Barrow going to left back.

Ryan Prosser then came on for Kayne McLaggon who had worked hard without much success after about 74 minutes. A couple of minutes later we finally got the second goal when a long ball forward by Rhys Baggridge found Ian Traylor 25 yards out. He ran into the area, turned one way then the other, and slotted a left-foot shot just inside the post.

You could argue the third goal was from a move started by Glyn Garner when after about 78 minutes he had to get down well to push away a long shot from the right. The ball didn’t go out and it was sent down the right for Ryan Prosser to challenge the Basingstoke no. 4. Under pressure, he tried to play the ball back to his keeper from nearly 30 yards out but put it well wide of him and saw it go into the net.

At 3-0 up with ten minutes to go we could afford to let Ashley Evans, who had taken a knock earlier, go off to be replaced by Elliot Scotcher.

The final goal came about a minute from the end when Ryan Prosser put the ball out to Ian Traylor on the right of the area. He waltzed through a largely flat-footed Basingstoke defence to easily beat the keeper from 10 yards.

So, a comprehensive win that got easier as the game went on. Basingstoke featured among the pre-season favourites for promotion maybe because of their full-time status, but it must be questionable how successful a side at least half made up of 19/20-year-olds can be in this division. They defended well at times, and had a fair bit of possession in the first half, but failed to make much of the few opportunities to score they did create.

They did have some good support for a Tuesday night match though, boosting the attendance to a good figure of 508 (although there didn’t seem that many!)

For us, I made Ian Traylor man of the match for his two goals, the first one being the key, but there were a number of good performances.
