Opposition Next Season

Post  Merthyr Imp on Tue Apr 26, 2016 3:30 pm

In tonight's Division One South & West play-offs, Banbury United beat Winchester City 1-0 so in the final will be at home to Taunton who beat Swindon Supermarine 2-1. So 2nd plays 3rd.

In the Division One Central play-offs, AFC Rushden & Diamonds beat Royston Town 2-1 away and will be away to St Ives who beat Egham Town away on penalties. So 4th play 5th.

Cinderford, of course were the South & West champions and are promoted with Central Division champions Kings Langley (from near Hemel Hempstead).

Not all relegation issues are settled yet from National Leagues North and South, but Basingstoke Town are down, so they might be a possibility for being placed in the Southern Premier. Lowestoft Town are not relegated yet, but if they are let's hope they're allocated to the Ryman League.

Hungerford's average attendance this season was 149, the third lowest in the Premier Division. Their highest was just 249.

Hungerford and St Ives both go up having finished in 4th place. Banbury did at least finish a close 2nd to Cinderford

Aye I spotted the fourth finishers as well. And Leamington finished fifth...

On a parochial note, it's great to see Midlands clubs playing us next season. Shame about Rushden. Hopefully Banbury will be in our division!

It's the team - not the attendanceces that count - big crowds, poor results mean no progress!

Thankfully, Lowestoft Town were put in the Isthmian League.

Hereford, as expected, are in Div 1 South & West as are Salisbury.

Relegated Bedworth United have been moved to the Northern Premier League

Like Villa & Newcastle in the Championship Hereford & Salisbury will be the main attractions in the S&W division, some tasty Bristol derbies involving Mangos, Yate & Paulton will make it an intresting league to keep an eye on.

I don't know if this is definite or not, but if we are away to Hereford it appears this will be their only home pre-season friendly.  If so, there'll likely be a big crowd (especially if they've got the FA Vase to parade) - would we get a share of the gate receipts?

The following appeared on their Bulls News website a week or so ago:

'In an interview with BBC Hereford and Worcester, Martin Watson, Hereford FC's Football Secretary, has confirmed that there will be one home friendly before the start of next season.
"The pitch we inherited hadn't been looked after for a year." said Watson. "...it needed a lot of work this summer so as soon as we had the chance the top came off it. We've put about 90 tonnes of new soil on there but it'll need a lot of time to bed in.

'"The problem with that is that with a new top on it it needs a lot of rest so we are currently looking at one pre-season friendly at home."'

Some uncertainty at Cinderford at the moment according to this:

http://www.gloucestercitizen.co.uk/Cinderford-Town-chairman-Ashley-Saunders-steps/story-29294019-detail/story.html

If they did turn down promotion it's been suggested that Bedworth would be reprived from relegation.

Regarding Cinderford, there seems nothing definite yet, but the latest comments on their Forum indicate they may turn down promotion for financial reasons. Also, they seem likely to lose several players, some of them - as with Kris Leek and Jamie Rewbury for us a year ago - not wanting the extra travel involved in the Premier Division.

If they don't accept promotion and Bedworth are reprieved it could complicate things as Bedworth were due to go into the Northern Premier League First Division. That could mean a club being moved across from the South & West Division instead, with a look at the map indicating Evesham could be the most likely - or possibly Hereford. This is just speculation though!

Now on Cinderford's Forum and Twitter that they have in fact contacted the league to turn down promotion to the Premier division.

Further to the Cinderford business, it's also being suggested that as Stamford in the Northern Premier League Premier Division finished with more points than Bedworth they should be the club reprieved from relegation. If so (and I may have got this wrong) that seems to indicate a club being moved from the Northern Premier to the Southern Premier - which, looking at a map, by coincidence may be Stamford themselves.

Or it could be Corby Town.

It's official now:

https://www.southern-football-league.co.uk/league-news/steelmen-return-but-robins-moved-to-npl-after-foresters-opt-out-of-promotion

Stamford in the Northern Premier are the club reprieved from relegation, with Corby being transferred across into the Southern Premier for next season.

Evesham are being moved into the Northern Division One.
