Today's teams:

Garner;
Davies,Wright,Baggridge,Bloom;
Evans;
Traylor,Brown,Reffell,Jenkins;
McLaggon

Subs:
Bowen for Brown after about 67 minutes
Tancock for Baggridge after about 76 minutes
Hugh for Bloom at the same time
Chappelle
Clarke

No sign of Ryan Prosser, so he was unable to make it to his usual total of 20 goals for the season.

The first moment of danger from either side came after about 8 minutes when Jon Brown's ball forward to Kayne McLaggon failed to be cut out by a defender, leaving McLaggon free to run into the area where he seemed to be brought down, however, play was waved on.

After about 15 minutes we perhaps ought to have scored when Keyon Reffell got free down the left and ran into the box before squaring the ball across for Kayne McLaggon and Jon Brown to have shots blocked at close range by defenders and the keeper.

On about 22 minutes Kayne McLaggon fooled two defenders with a turn and then combined with Jon Brown to run into the area where he was tackled, and this time a penalty was given, although from 100 yards away it looked less like a penalty than the earlier incident.  But it turned out to be academic as Ian Traylor saw his kick too easily saved by the keeper going down to his left

After about 34 minutes the closest Slough came to a goal (and almost the only time) in the half was from a ball in from the left which was headed away to a player on the other side who fired a shot across the face of goal and narrowly past the far post. About a minute later Corey Jenkins did well with a typically pacey run down the right and put the ball to Keyon Reffell in the area but his shot was blocked for a corner.

On about 42 minutes Reffell got in a shot from the edge of the area which drew a fine save from the keeper to push it away, and a minute later Slough had their keeper to thank again when Ashley Evans, given a lot of space in midfield ran forward and fired in a shot which may have been deflected. With it dipping just under the bar the keeper got up to tip it over.

It could easily have been 4-1 at half time and no-one could have complained, with Slough's goalkeeper, Mark Scott, having been outstanding for them.

We had an opportunity about 4 minutes after half time when Ian Traylor, under some pressure, skied the ball over the bar from just inside the area after Keyon Reffell had laid the ball back to him.

Slough's keeper then seemed to be in some discomfort after clearing the ball and went down for some treatment before having to go off not long afterwards on 55 minutes with what seemed to be a groin strain. Midfielder Gurkan Gokman took over in goal, and with their star man of the first half no longer in the game it looked promising for Merthyr. However, the real turning point of the match, which basically ended it as a contest came about 2 minutes later when Slough's Dan Hicks (who had been their best defender) launched into a tackle on Keyon Reffell from which he came off worse. However, after receiving treatment he was shown a straight red card and Merthyr were facing a team not only with a stand-in keeper but also down to 10 men.

It did take about 6 minutes before we took advantage, when Keyon Reffell combined with Kayne McLaggon on the edge of the area before slotting the ball past the keeper.

Jaye Bowen was then given a bit of game time in midfield in place of Jon Brown, and a couple of minutes later we made it 2-0. A long free kick into the area was headed straight into the net by Rhys Baggridge.

A couple of minutes after that Slough's stand-in keeper kept the score down after Keyon Reffell got to the byline on the right and pulled the ball back to Ian Traylor at the near post but the keeper did well to save with his legs.  He did even better from the resulting corner, pushing the ball away from a Corey Jenkins header at the near post.

With about 76 minutes gone we made a couple more changes, with Scott Tancock on for Rhys Baggridge and Chris Hugh for James Bloom in straight swaps.

With us well on top against the 10 men it was a question of whether we could score any more, but we couldn't manage it, with Adam Davies perhaps a little unfortunate to see his shot from the right of the area go wide of the far post after he was played in by Ian Traylor. Kayne McLaggon also saw a shot go wide when he might have done better.

So, a deserved win in the end, as we'd looked the better side even when Slough had a proper goalkeeper and eleven players, with them rarely looking like scoring. It was an entertaining game to finish the season on - and in front of another good crowd, too - and was certainly not a desultory end of season-type match.

For me it was between Ashley Evans and Keyon Reffell as man of the match.

Another season comes to an end, and a solid 10th place, four points behind King's Lynn. Good to make it into double figures for home wins for the season, and worth noting is our goal difference which is by far the best of any team outside the top eight. The records show a much better second half to the season compared to before the turn of the year, and let's hope that will carry over into next season.

Interesting to look at the fortunes of the other promoted clubs from last season - our fellow champions Kettering only just missed out on the play-offs, but of the two play-off winners, Stratford are only just outside the bottom four while Bedworth have gone straight back down. Also worth noting Paulton, play-off winners, as we know all too well two seasons ago have also gone back down.
