1-0 down 32nd min. A good passing move by Redditch resulted in Sam Merton scoring. Albeit against the run of play.

Great result, well done SJ & the whole squad, a superb effort. Just goes to show that with a couple of quality additions to the squad together with Gavin's return next season we could have a really good go of progressing out of this League.

Today's team:

Garner;
Tancock,Baggridge,Wright,Davies;
Reffell,Evans,Brown;
Traylor,Prosser,Jenkins;

Subs:
McLaggon for Prosser after about 23 minutes
Hugh for Jenkins after about 82 minutes
Bloom for Traylor after about 90 minutes
Chappelle
Clarke

With Gethin Jones still out injured the only changes from the team that started on Saturday were Corey Jenkins in for Chris Hugh and Kayne McLaggon and Jordan Chappelle on the bench.

The formation was that which did so well in the second half against Cambridge City, with Ryan Prosser as the lone striker supported by Ian Traylor and Corey Jenkins wide, and Keyon Reffell and Jon Brown in front of Ashley Evans in midfield.

Not a common sight at this level of football was both sides fielding goalkeepers with full international caps - Jose Veiga for Redditch having represented Cape Verde.

As well as Merthyr, Redditch also employed a lone striker, and did not exactly start as if they meant to take control of the game, in fact it was a very uneventful first 20 minutes or so, with the first corner of the game falling to Redditch after about 23 minutes and being headed wide. Immediately after that Kayne McLaggon came on for Ryan Prosser who had seemed rather out of sorts and was clearly not fully fit.

After about 31 minutes the first on target attempt at goal by either side produced the lead for Redditch. The ball was played across from the left and turned into middle of the goal by an attacker, although Rhys Baggridge may have got a touch on it.

But we soon got an equaliser, just a couple of minutes later Kayne McLaggon blocked a clearance about 35 yards out in the middle, ran on and fired the ball into the net from just inside the area with the keeper just unable to keep it out.

There was a dodgy moment for us when Glyn Garner came to meet a long throw-in at the near post but either missed it completely or got a slight touch on the ball as it went across the face of the goal.

We took the lead a couple of minutes before the break when Kayne McLaggon challenged for the ball on the edge of the Redditch area. It broke for Jon Brown and he hit a great shot into the top corner from 20 yards to break his scoring duck in fine style.

A first half of few chances for either side, but three goals. It had been fairly even, but we'd made good use of the few chances we'd had, and the general lack of urgency shown by Redditch was surprising.

We pressed them back at the start of the second half, and on about 50 minutes Ian Traylor set up Kayne McLaggon for a shot that went just over the bar. That was about as near as we came to a goal in the second half as Redditch began to have most of the play, forcing us onto the defensive. However, we absorbed the pressure, with Glyn Garner having to do well to push away a 25-yard shot after about 73 minutes. Redditch had a bit of a scramble after about 75 minutes before we cleared the ball, but then they began to really press, and on about 78 minutes we were glad to see a shot from the right go past the far post. About 3 minutes after that Garner had to make another good save, dropping on a shot on the line.

Chris Hugh replaced Corey Jenkins on about 82 minutes as a more defensive player, and we continued to hold out despite a lot of pressure by Redditch, the closest being on about 88 minutes when a shot went across goal and just wide as were hanging on.

On the 90th minute when Redditch won a corner James Bloom came on for Ian Traylor, maybe partly as a timewasting ploy, but probably to give us a bit more height to defend the corner.
In the third minute of added time Redditch were given a free kick just outside the area on the left and sent their keeper up for it, but we managed to clear the kick, and although Redditch thought they'd won a corner on the other side a goal kick was given and we'd held on for another good result against a top side.

Well, another good team performance and difficult to choose a man of the match as all did well, but a special mention for Scott Tancock, Adam Davies, consistent as ever, Ashley Evans for getting stuck in, especially towards the end and of course Kayne McLaggon for scoring one goal and making the other. Keyon Reffell and Jon Brown give us a lot of mobility in midfield with Ashley Evans anchoring things.

Overall, for those of us with longish memories you couldn't have seen a greater contrast with the team's performance the last time Redditch United played at Penydarren Park

For most of the first half it was like an end of season game - which of course it was for us, but you would have expected Redditch to have not only looked a better side but to have shown more urgency. When they did put some pressure on us in the last half hour we stood up to it well.

Top of the league.
Not the best team we played up the park but not the worst team.
we played superb and revell and brown did do well i must say.
tanock and davies had superb games along with ashleigh.
we looked better at the back with wright and to be honest id like see gethin instead of baggridge for a go.
with a couple of extra players And a few out we should have a strong season next yr i believe.
This still this season to go yet and aywe playing u never know the playoffs !!
And brown goal well what a strike !!!!!

From the Redditch web site

Merthyr Town 2, Redditch United 1
Redditch suffered their first defeat in six games as Merthyr came from behind to take the points, writes to David Lawrence.

The visitors had the better of the chances early on with George Carline heading just wide after getting on the end of an Ashley Sammons corner.
The breakthrough came on 31 minutes, a slick passing move that saw Luke Shearer and Sammons combine before the ball was worked to Sam Merson who slotted home his second goal in as many games since linking up from Biggleswade Town.
But the goal spurred the home side into action and they responded with two goals before the break.
Substitute Kayne McLaggon was on target with the first on 34 minutes, charging down Calum Flanagan’s clearance before wrong-footing keeper Jose Veiga and rolling the ball into the net.
And with three minutes of the half remaining, the Martyrs scored what proved to be their winner when the Reds defence failed to clear their lines and Jon Brown fired home from 18 yards.
There could have been a third for Merthyr at the start of the second half but this time McLaggon sent his header the wrong side of the post.
From then on United pressed for an equaliser but struggled to break down a solid home defence.
Merson had a shot deflected wide of the target before Sammons saw his effort parried by keeper Glen Garner before being cleared by his defence.
Jack Hallahan was the first of three Redditch substitutes in the final quarter and he twice went close to equalising, firing wide from just outside the area and then seeing an 81st minute shot well saved by keeper Garner
And then, in the final minute, Simeon Maye miscued in front of goal following good work by Merso
