Song for Europe ( Well Merthyr anyway)

Post  Boz1964 on Fri Mar 11, 2016 1:58 pm

In the view of the recent call for a new song that the players can emerge from the tunnel , I thought I would offer a few suggestions:-

1. The Eye of the Traylor ( Survivor).

2. Three Linos on a Shirt ( Baddiel , Skinner & The Corey Jenkins Seeds)

3. It's Training Men - (The Weather girls)

4. Brothers in Arms - (Dire Straits)

5. There's a Harmon-y in my Head- ( The Buzzcocks).

6. We built this 3G ( on rock n Romans)- ( Starship).

7.Saturday Nights alright for Fighting ( Elton John)

8. Twist Again?- (Chubbsie Checker)

9. Living for the Weekend- ( Hard - Fi)

10. Shooting Stars- ( Dollar)

Please add your own suggestions....but keep them clean....Boz

How about Green Onions by Booker T and the MG's to match my boots.

Incidently they will be on display for the last time at Bedworth tomorrow as after that normal service will be resumed as Barry resumes duty. I'll be happy to take your cash at the turnstiles, though!

* Fanfare for the common man - ELP. Quite poignant today.

* Boys are back in town - Thin Lizzy

* Love to Love - UFO!

I think the song should be a Welsh, Patriotic and Stirring.

What about Dowlais Voice Choir singing Men of Harlech?

Just a thought.

Boz I think you're going overboard a bit on this one.Next thing you'll want Meurig leading them out in Rourke's Drift(South Wales Borderer's) uniform with O.S. RUNNING BY THE SIDE OF HIM SHOUTING.."For God's sake Meurig sing something they know". Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

How about this oddity: ACAB, Where have all the Bootboys Gone. ACAB are a Malaysian skinhead band. There is apparently a bit of an Oi! scene out there.  This song is more a traditional rock number though. The lyrics are great:

I still remember those glory days
Where no one dared to get in our ways

It only seems like yesterday
Seeing boots and braces all the way

We used to live out on the streets
We used to drink and used to steal to eat
We shared the joy and we shared the pain
I've never thought you'd call it a day

We were so proud
We were so strong
But now where have all the bootboys gone?
The joy we had
The pain we shared
Are always on my mind.

Can't fault that! You're welcome.

Interesting choice of songs, Mountain Ash ....quite enjoyed the first one...but doubt in view of our 'Community Club' status it would 'play' to the powers that be....and given that a lot of our fans parents were never married and served in the Constabulary...then it would not be their first choice...now the green bootboys?....might be different...Boz

Given that remark I don't think they would, unless I have misunderstood the comment.

Indeed. But, I suspect that the band chose the name as it has a British connection and connections with a particular era (it was, of course a well known graffiti meme back in the day).  The band however and are Malaysian and so it probably has no more significance there than any other bit of "Engrish".

As for the song. It has, apparently, been covered by others.

Anyhow, what I love about the song is that it is a sort of a lament for youth. And how people move on, thus:

We shared the joy and we shared the pain
I've never thought you'd call it a day

It is a bit like that Jimmy in Quadrophenia when he stated that he would always be a mod. Meanwhile many of the other characters saw the Brighton weekend as fad and something to do.

But, for the sake of this thread, I saw how some of the words could be given another, newer, context.  Thus:

I still remember those glory days
Where no one dared to get in our ways

We were so proud
We were so strong
But now where have all the bootboys gone?
The joy we had
The pain we shared
Are always on my mind.

It could be the whole football experience encapsulated in them there words.

Anyhow, yeah,  you are right. The name of the artists may well, to put it mildly, alienate a few.   I just took the chance to promote a song I feel deserves more of an audience What a Face

The good thing is with the Martyrs of 87 being launched next month, the 'glory days' can be enjoyed on CD by all ( like Quadrophenia) as long as CD players exist.....Boz
