Well done to Jordan Chappelle making it 2-0. I suppose Prosser must have been substituted.

The last information I saw was that the first leg of the final was due to be played w/c 21 March, and the second leg w/c 4 April.

Cambridge were due to be at home in the league on 23rd March and 6th April, but I suppose this will take precedence. We'll wait and see.

Hopefully we'll be able to host the 2nd leg. It could be a great opportunity to get a good crowd, especially if it is during the Easter School Holidays as well

If Carlsberg made poor football matches then last night was probably the poorest game in the world. The pitch was very sticky with a slope running down from one touchline to the other and although you couldn’t fault the players for their effort and commitment against an enthusiastic opponent they couldn’t string passes together or pose a sustained threat on the Northwood goal.
Clarke replaced the cup tied Garner in goal and Brown had a run out in place of Jenkins and Prosser came in for McLaggon who joined Jenkins, Bloom and Development Team youngster Chappelle on the bench.

The initial stages of the game were played in midfield and was very scrappy and set the tone for the evening. Reffell did make one good run and got into the Northwood box and fell over the legs of Budden with the ball running through to the Woods keeper, Laurencin. Then Brown and the excellent Davies linked well on the left and Davies got to the byline and set it back to Brown whose cross was cleared by Ehui. Set pieces into the area were failing to beat the first man and when a Traylor free kick was headed clear by the Woods defence it fell to Evans who sent it left to Davies and his cross bounced in front of Laurencin and he fumbled it and it seemed an age before he managed to get the ball under control with no intervention from a Merthyr player.
Northwood had a chance when Tancock missed a long clearance from Laurencin and it fell to Ehui whose 25 yard effort went high and wide of Clarke’s goal. A few minutes later Hastings got in a good low cross which skidded across the Merthyr area with no Northwood player in attendance and away for a goal kick. Wright then got in a header from a free kick taken by Traylor after a foul on Reffell but the referee pulled back play for a foul on Laurencin. Wright then sent a long ball down the left and with Prosser in pursuit the ball was sent back to Laurencin but Prosser did well to rob the Woods keeper but a defender nipped in and got it away for a corner which failed to beat the first man. Baggridge, under pressure, then conceded a corner which was cleared by Evans but only as far as Nicholas whose shot from about 20 yards went high over the Merthyr bar and into the adjoining cemetery which seemed strangely apt!

Ehui was causing a few problems on the left but failed to trouble the Merthyr defence overly. Northwood then gave the Merthyr defence their first real problem when from a corner Brown sent a far post header across goal but it didn’t fall to a Woods player and was scrambled away for a corner. From the corner Budden sent in a good header which Clarke, at full stretch, palmed the ball over the bar for another corner which came to nothing. Merthyr had a chance when Prosser headed down a good long ball to Traylor but the winger screwed his shot wide. There was a bit of a flashpoint when a long clearance was picked up by Stead inside the Merthyr half and he slid it through towards Muir and Clarke did well to get down to claim the ball but Stead followed through and his foot came into contact with Clarke’s head, leaving the keeper on the ground and Stead was shown a yellow card. There followed a melee as Merthyr felt the challenge deserved a red and Davies received a yellow card for dissent and Baggridge seemed to receive just a ticking off for his part in the handbags situation. Laurencin again failed to deal with a high ball but again recovered to claim the ball before he was punished. Northwood then had a chance when Jones, attempting to shepherd a long ball down the right out of play was robbed and Brown nipped in and put it into the area and Ehui sent it towards goal and Clarke, going down to his left, got a good palm to the ball and pushed it around the post. Mysteriously, Mr Atkin awarded a goal kick and shortly afterwards the dismal half ended scoreless.

Northwood were in the ascendancy in the 2nd half but Clarke was rarely troubled and in attempt to freshen things up from a Merthyr point of view Jenkins replaced Traylor and McLaggon came on for Brown but these changes did little to improve the game. Clarke again did well when a long ball bounced up in the D and the Merthyr keeper came out to head the ball over the head on the onrushing attacker and Jones completed the clearance. Davies did well to break up Northwood attacks down his flank and was trying to get forward as much as possible to support the forwards but even with his interventions very little was created. Muir got hold of the ball on the edge of the Merthyr area and Clarke had to get down quickly to make a good save from Muir’s low shot.

McLaggon and Reffell were trying to link up on the right but failed to trouble the Woods defence and just before the end Reffell, who was suffering from cramp was replaced by Chappelle. There was a dearth of goalmouth action in the second half, which was marginally worse than the first, hence the brevity of my description. The referee brought the game to an end and we went straight to penalties, mercifully not having to play 30 minutes of Extra Time first.

The shootout went as follows –
Evans – shot down the middle, keeper didn’t move and saved the kick
Ehui – went wide of Clarke’s right hand post
McLaggon – powerful shot down the middle, keeper moved – goal. 1-0
Nicholas – shot sent Clarke the wrong way but hits post. 1-0
Chappelle – high into the roof of the net to the keepers left. 2-0
Burgess – puts ball on the spot, walked to just outside the centre circle, ran in like a fast bowler and put it down the middle. 2-1
Wright – sends Laurencin the wrong way. 3-1
Lomas – over the dive of Clarke to his left. 3-2
Davies – to keepers left. Laurencin gets hand to it but can’t prevent it going in. 4-2

Poor game but a good result. MOTM for me was Adam Davies who hardly put a foot wrong all night and deserved to take the winning kick. Room for improvement, yes but effort cannot be faulted and neither can be the commitment of the players as most probably got home about 2am but still had to be up for work a few hours later.

Onwards and upwards and a Cup Final to look forward to, albeit over 2 legs!

Good to see the team fighting hard on a bad pitch. Looking forward to seeing the club in a final which we haven't won for 65 years. Good to see Steve Jenkins giving young Jordan some time on the pitch. Also go to see Cameron keeping up his form and making saves to keep us in the game, no doubt he will not get picked until the first leg now!

Adam Davies surely must be a strong contender for player of the year,so consistent.

Possibly a bit of poetic license. It was a dire game.
